Reprocessed UV pulses from the binary companions of X-ray pulsars

چکیده
A search for reprocessed X-rays causing UV pulsations in the companion stars to X-ray pulsars was carried out in a 200 Å wide bandpass centered at 1450 Å using the High Speed Photometer on theHubble Space Telescope. We observed the systems A0535+26 = HD245770, 4U0900-40 (Vela XR-1) = HD77581, A1118-61 = He3-640, and 4U1145-619 = HD102567. We confirm the existence of reprocessed X-rays reported in 4U0900-40 by Boroson et al. (1996) and give upper limits on the pulsed fraction in our UV bandpass present in the other systems. Archival IUE spectra are consistent with the finding of Boroson et al. that the UV radiation from HD77581 is emitted primarily in resonance emission lines from multiply ionized metals. The existence of two different pulse frequencies (UV and X-ray) in an X-ray binary system makes it dynamically equivalent to a double-lined spectroscopic binary. If the UV pulses are emitted from a site in the primary’s outer atmosphere rather than its stellar wind, then the mass of the neutron star can be derived from the orbital phase dependence of the two frequencies.

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کامل3 High Mass X - ray Binary Pulsars in the Small Magellanic Cloud
We report two additions to the class of accreting X-ray pulsars from the direction of the Small Magellanic Cloud with periods of 263 and 202 s. (Recently Haberl & Pietsch (2004) reported the 263 s pulsar.) The source positions of these two pulsars are consistent with early B stars in the SMC and therefore we identify them as high mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs). Properties of an ensemble of 24 opti...
متن کاملX-ray Pulsars in the Small Magellanic Cloud
XMM-Newton archival data for the Small Magellanic Cloud have been examined for the presence of previously undetected X-ray pulsars. One such pulsar, with a period of 202 s, is detected. Its position is consistent with an early B star in the SMC and we identify it as a high mass X-ray binary (HMXB). In the course of this study we determined the pulse period of the possible AXP CXOU J010043.1-721...
متن کاملRecent Results on the Anomalous X–ray Pulsars
∼ 50 accreting pulsars in X–ray binaries have massive companion stars. They are therefore classified as High Mass X–ray Binaries (HMXRB). In most cases this is based on the observation of their optical counterparts. Ten X–ray pulsars are optically identified with OB supergiant stars, while Be companions have been found for ∼20 pulsars. Many of the optically unidentified X–ray pulsars are inferr...
متن کاملX - Ray Emission from the Planet Pulsar B 1257 + 12
We report the detection of the millisecond pulsar B1257+12 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. In a 20 ks exposure we detected 25 photons from the pulsar, with energies between 0.4 and 2.0 keV, corresponding to the flux F X = (4.4 ± 0.9) × 10 −15 ergs s −1 cm −2 in this energy range. The X-ray spectrum can be described by a power-law model with photon index Γ ≈ 2.8 and luminosity L X ≈ 2.5 × 10...
